Retrieving Trial at Glenroy, Point Sturt

I was very pleased to be able to accept an appointment to judge the Novice stake at the trial held by the above club on May 19th, whilst on holiday in S.A. It was quite exciting setting runs on a totally new site, and I feel that the competing dogs were faced with challenging runs. Run one had two small barriers of bushes down a slight hill and the throw at approx 90 metres which required the dog to mark down. Unfortunately not all dogs estimated the distance, and yet others performed well. The second run was at full distance with the dogs being asked to negotiate their way down a rocky slope, and the third run tested the remaining dogs on facing the water, even though no swimming depth was available. I was impressed with the desire of the dogs, and pleased that most were able to use their nose to advantage. All the handlers were polite and very friendly, and a joy to adjudicate, and, as always, it was fun for me to judge Novice. My winning dog on the day showed great potential and my congratulations to her owner, Ben. Thanks to Gail and to Neville and Rob for your help on the day. Hopefully I can return one day to judge and compete with my own dogs in S.A.
